How to Make Money Online - and it’s not in the MMO niche!

by Kathy

OK, I’m making my morning blog rounds and have been reading the “words of wisdom” from various bloggers.  Somehow, I’ve accidentally subscribed to a couple of blogs in the MMO niche - though they don’t proclaim themselves to be MMO blogs.  As a matter of fact, one of these bloggers was “called out” and felt the need to defend himself because he claims to be all about helping beginning bloggers but what he’s really preaching is the old MMO garbage.

Several of these bloggers are sharing their “earnings” and, quite honestly, I’m STUNNED!  There are people (whose Alexa rankings are higher than mine, by the way- which means they get more traffic than I do) who are reporting monthly earnings of less than $100 on their blog.

I’m surprised that they’re sharing this information.  I mean $80 a month income from your blog isn’t exactly cause for excitement when the big news recently is of a relatively low profile blogger who sold his blog to Bankrate.com for $15 Million Dollars.

Yesterday, I made the monthly trek to my mailbox to pick up my mail.  In it were affiliate checks totaling more than $660.  These checks arrived as a direct result of promoting 3 different products.  These are three products that I use and believe in and recommend that my clients use as well.

Affiliate marketing is not the foundation of my business, it’s a side line.  My real business is helping people who don’t “speak Geek” to get a web presence up and running.

Since I have this skill, I have dabbled in launching other websites for fun and profit.  I used to think Adsense stories were just that - stories, until I started to launch blogs OUTSIDE of the web development genre.

A few days earlier, I received a check (at home) from Google Adsense in the mail.  Since it’s against the TOS to disclose what I make from Adsense, let me just say that those checks arrive on a regular basis here and have gotten a LOT bigger since I’ve “branched out” and started launching blogs offering content on things other than Make Money Online Blogging.

In her post, Be A Business Success Story, No Matter What Your Age Cath Lawson shares several high profile success stories.  Notice that every single Adsense success story is from a blog OUTSIDE the “MMO” scope.

In other words, the real way to MMO is to take the “simple” route of choosing a tightly targeted niche and then creating a blog with information people want to read.  Remember, I said it was simple, I didn’t say it was EASY!

The key to making money online is simple- VERY SIMPLE.  However, just because it’s simple doesn’t mean it’s EASY!

It all begins with targeting a niche market - but if you’re sick of the “find riches in niches” line of BS, pick up a copy of my book,Beyond the Niche: Essential Tools You Need to Create Marketing Messages that Deliver Results It’s a step by step guide to identifying your most profitable niche market.  The book is written for brick and mortar business owners, but the website owner will find TONS of useful information in there as well.

My best Adsense earner is a free kids educational website. Both kids and parents love it and I am unsure if the ads being clicked are accidents by the kids or interested parents in the product but it works out the same for me.

Adsense works best when Google can display targeted ads of interest to your audience. Since your site is tightly targeted, it makes it easy for Google to show the “right” ads which will get clicks. As you stated, clicks are how you’ll “make your paper” with Adsense!
